Marriage Is the Institution That Lasts Essay

Well, I did it. I wrote it and sent it and I bring it to you now. Do not laugh too much, I do not mean a single word but I had no bloody choice! And Bel, THANK YOU! You've been really helpful and I appreciate it!

Marriage Is the Institution That Lasts

"Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?", said

Groucho Marx. It turns out that a lot of people do. The institution of marriage exists for

thousands of years and it has been one of the foundations of the society. Procreation is one of

the main purposes of the humans' lives and getting married is the first step in starting a family.

That is only one of the many reasons for people to get married. In marriage people benefit both

materially and spiritually.

Being in love is what majority of married people would name as their main reason of signing that contract in the first place. They also say that love itself is not enough to make marriage work. In a marriage one really gets to know their significant other. They learn to compromise in the process, to appreciate one another and to accept each other both with their virtues and their flaws. Naturally, every marriage has its ups and downs. Signing that contract gives them a reason more to hold on, to make it work even through the hard times. "The paper", as it is often called, has not only the obligatory but also the symbolic role; it declares to the world the dedication of two people to spend their lives together. They become a family and when hard times come, they do not abandon each other, just like people do not abandon their parents or siblings in times of trouble.

By getting married, before God or the state, they give each other a firm promise of loving, respecting and standing by each other no matter what. No such promise is given when people are simply co-habiting. Marriage is an institution and is recognized and protected as such by the law. There are numerous rights and benefits that are guaranteed to the married couples. For instance, if one gets ill and ends up in a hospital unable to speak for oneself, a spouse has the power to decide on the medical treatment or procedures that one should get. Should one die, the spouse and the children inherit everything. In case of a divorce, everything is didvided in two halves since it is considered that in marriage everything was earned or acquired by both spouses. This protects women in particular since there have been numerous cases in the past of women being left with nothing and practically out on the street after the divorce. Now the law treats spouses as equals.

One of the main roles of marriage is starting a family and raising children in a healthy and loving environment. Children benefit tremendously from having both of their parents around. They are raised in a traditional way and learn what the traditional roles of men and women in a society are. It is also much easier on the parents; they are not alone when it comes to taking care of the children and there is always someone to rely on or to turn to when problems occur. They also share the responsibilities and the burdens of everyday life such as costs of living or problems in coping with the working environment. Just having someone to talk to at the end of the long day can be a blessing and is certainly worth fighting for.

Marriage is like building a building. If the foundation is firm and a lot of hard work is put

into it, it will last forever and it will provide shelter and security for its inhabitants. However, it

is important to understand that love alone is not enough. Marriage should be based on trust,

acceptance, hard work and will to compromise. Only then it will last and work out successfully.

Marriage Is The Institution Of The Past Essay Rewritten

I had to rewrite my essay for a few reasons blah blah... Anyway, here's the final version:

Marriage Is the Institution of the Past

"I am never going to get married." I realize that this sentence sounds quite radical but at

this point I am perfectly willing to sign my name under it, especially when I see so many

marriages falling apart and ending in a divorce. It seems to me that people do not realize that

when they get married, they actually sign a contract that is supposed to be honoured. Right

now, I am pretty sure I would not be able to do that. I might change my mind some day but I

sincerely doubt that I will.

There are a few reasons I have against getting married. It seems to me that no one takes marriage seriously these days. The newest statistics show that every fourth marriage ends in a divorce today. To me it shows that people get married without actually thinking it through, without taking into serious consideration what getting married really means. A lot of people cannot see beyond the wedding day. They do not realize that marriage is actually what follows the wedding, that marriage is living day after day with the same person seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. So many times it happens that people really get to know each other when they start living together and then realize the other person is not who they thought they were. This leads to a divorce so often and it does not really matter if the marriage does not work since the divorce is not shameful anymore. That means that, instead of working on their marriage, people tend to take the easy way out and simply give up.

Marriage is supposed to be an institution that lasts. It is supposed to last more than a few years, that is, but in the world where people get married because a child is on the way, it is no wonder when the marriage falls apart before the child gets its teeth. Of course, bringing children up in a stable home probably fills one with a sense of accomplishment. However, a lot of married couples think that a child will make them closer or even make the marriage stronger. In fact, if a marriage is not strong enough by itself, having another child will often lead to its end. It must be wonderful to have a partner to lean on while struggling with the problems of everyday life. Further more, growing old with someone has to be much easier than growing old alone. Then again, people tend to develop gross habits as they get old. I cannot imagine living with someone who forgets to change their undrewear on regular basis. I could not possibly spend my life with someone who snores either. I have a very light sleep and I would be awaken by snoring every single night. I am sure that would drive me mad in no time.

I believe that getting married to someone requires a great amount of courage and maturity because love is simply not enough. People cannot live on love alone and the truth is, love fades away. One has to be ready to compromise a lot and I am not so sure people are willing to do that today. I know I am not. I am the first one to leave when the going gets tough. I can't even imagine making a commitment to one person for the rest of my life. With that in mind, I prefer not getting married at all to signing a contract that I know I could never honour, not "till death do us part" anyway.

Marriage is not what it used to be. It is taken lightly and it does not have the significance nor the value it used to have in the past. When marriage is not the only option for raising a family or having financial security, more and more people decide against it. Marriage is turning into an institution from the past. I believe it is outdated. That is why that is exactly where it should stay – in the past.

Marriage Today Essay

I have an essay to write. I must choose a topic first. There are a few: is downloading a crime, abortion, marriage today, Bologna process, affirmative action, capital punishment. And you know I have an opinion on everything! But I don't know if I have enough opinion on any of those topics to actually write an essay. I'm pretty sure it'll be about marriage. Cuz it's not an essay if I write "Capital punishment is good. Death to all rapists and pedophiles!", right? Yeah, didn't think so...

Update: Well, I wrote it and decided to put it here.

Marriage Today
